MEETING MINUTES

December 2, 1998

Officers: Sally Butler (Planned Parenthood of Central Wa) Chair, Roger Krebs (Residential Services) Chair Elect, Jeri Strange (YMCA) Vice Chair, Bruce McComb (RECA Foundation) Secretary, Susan Thornton (League of Women Voters) Treasurer.

Meetings: Normally the first Wednesday of each month, 8:30 - 10:00 am, United Way Building.

In attendance: Dottie Walton-Luglan (American Cancer Society), Ed Frost (Ben-Franklin Transit), Carole Miller (B/F Health Dept.), Sandy Owen (B/F Health Dept), Pat Underwood (B/F Crisis Response Unit), Julie Davis (Chinook Campfire), Sylvia Bakan, (Div of Child & Fam Svcs), Nita Sullivan (FARE), Guillermo Casaneda (La Clinica), Susan Thornton (League of Women Voters), Colleen Kandle (Lutheran Social Services), Sally Butler (Planned Parenthood), Bruce McComb (RECA Foundation), Melanie Ogryzek (RYSC), Roger Krebs (TC Residential Svcs), Hazel Batchelor (United Way), Gail Greger (Volunteer Center), Jeri Strange (YMCA). Also Caroline Lopez and Ana Sanchez (La Clinica).

The meeting was called to order by Sally Butler at 9:00am.

Introductions/announcements:

Sally Butler (Planned Parenthood) - working on making sure that contraceptives are covered by insurance. Passed out petition.

Susan Thornton (Success by Six, League of Women Voters, Dispute Resolution Center) - needs help getting the message across to Franklin County Commissioners to support Dispute Resolution Center.

Dottie Walton- Luglan (American Cancer Society) - just finished 3 months of awareness campaigns. November smokeout was very successful - all but 2 area high schools participated. Target group is teens - to keep them from getting started. Gearing up for Daffodil Days in March and Relay for Life in early May.

Sandy Owen (B/F Health Dept) - The good news, teen births are down in Franklin County. The bad news, they are up in Benton County.

Melanie Ogryzek (Regional Youth Service Corps) - shared information on increase in coverage for Home Court.

Nita Sullivan (Foundation for Acupuncture Education) - has lots to share about the many applications of Acupuncture. FARE is also a new HSC member. Give her a call at 943-4517 or drop an e-mail note at scssf@bmi.net.

Roger Krebs (Residential Services). There is a change in their Open House. Please come by any time between 3 and 6pm on December 9th to help celebrate their 20th Anniversary.

Jeri Strange (YMCA) - the YMCA has moved to 1234 Columbia Dr SE. Christmas project - needs support. Wrapping will be on 18th at Volunteer Center. Nearly 200 kids are signed up to date. Delivery will be on the 22nd and 23rd.

Juli Davis (Campfire) - Open House will be noon to 5 on the 9th. Santa will be there after 3pm.

Gail Greagor (Volunteer Center) - Open house on the 17th from 4:30 until....

Carole Miller (B/F Health Dept) - reminded us that she is still the HSC rep. for the Franklin County Safety Network. Julie Davis is the rep. for Benton.

November minutes: 11/04/98 minutes approved by all.

Treasurer’s Report. Previous balance $3352.10. Income $200.00 New balance $3552.10.

New Business: Welfare reform reps. couldn’t make the meeting. A sample glue bottle that will go to the legislators was passed around. So far only Shirley Hankins has received a copy (in person). The rest will be delivered to the legislators and governor in the near future.

Jerri Strange moved that the HSC supplement the Christmas Project up to $500.00 if a shortfall occurs. Motion was seconded and approved by all. Sally will contact Target and others for donation of wrapping materials.

Program:

Guillermo Castaneda , Executive Director, La Clinica. Presented their "Survey Questions for Elimination of Barriers to the Access of Medical, Dental, and Social Services at La Clinicqa". An informational brochure on La Clinica was also provided for all. The attendants divided into two groups to discuss potential programs and focus for 1999. Results to be further discussed and disseminated by the Executive Committee at a later date.
